Northstar Offshore Petroleum and Energy (N.O.P.E.) is a multi-national energy corporation specializing in offshore oil and gas exploration, production, and refining. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, the company operates in deepwater drilling projects across the Gulf of Mexico, Northeast Europe, North Asia and Southeast Asia. Founded in 1987, Northstar has grown into a major privately held offshore energy firm, known for its controversial marketing strategies and competitive pricing.
Focussing on acquiring and training staff, the company took to leasing platforms from other companies before purchasing the British Petrol Rig Blackbeard Prospect for an undisclosed sum in 2005, entering the market as a low-cost offshore drilling partner around the US-American east coast.
In 2008, Northstar commissioned Korean manufacturer Sumsang Heavy Industries - Thailand to build a series of modular, ultra-deepwater drilling and exploration platforms for the company’s planned expansion towards the European, Asian and African continents.
Following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Disaster, Northstar was able to gain significant market shares by focussing on public relations work, highlighting the training and professionalism of their employees and showcasing the Northstar Eurasia platform in 2011, marketing it as the “Safest, most sustainable deepwater drilling and exploration solution to date”, a claim later challenged by environmental activists and marine biologists.
Blackbeard Prospect is a former offshore drilling platform acquired by Northstar Offshore Petroleum & Energy in 2005. Now operating in the Gulf of America, it remains the oldest active vessel in the company’s fleet and has undergone multiple retrofits to extend its service life.
Northstar Eurasia is a fleet of eight modular ultra-deepwater drilling platforms developed to support Northstar Offshore Petroleum & Energy’s international expansion. Operating across the northern hemisphere in partnership with European energy firms, the fleet represents the company’s largest coordinated offshore initiative.
Europa Borealis was a self-sufficient offshore drilling and refining vessel developed for Northstar Offshore Petroleum & Energy. The platform, noted for its limited public disclosure, was lost in a catastrophic incident in the North Sea in 2021, resulting in multiple fatalities.
Northstar Offshore Petroleum & Energy has, throughout its operational history, been the subject of various unverified claims, conspiracy theories, and speculative narratives circulating in independent media, maritime watchdog groups, and online forums. The company has consistently denied the validity of these allegations, attributing them to misinformation, misinterpretation of operational data, or attempts to undermine corporate credibility within competitive energy markets.
