Following the loss of Europa Borealis in 2021, speculation emerged regarding the platform’s intended function and the circumstances surrounding its destruction.

Some theories suggest that the vessel’s design extended beyond conventional drilling, storage, and refining capabilities, citing the lack of publicly available technical documentation and limited disclosure surrounding the Northstar–Uralmoskva partnership.

Additional claims question the timeline and transparency of the recovery and investigation process.

Reports have also circulated alleging that families of deceased crew members, as well as surviving personnel, were required to sign non-disclosure agreements as part of post-incident compensation settlements. These claims are often accompanied by speculation that financial payouts ranged into six- or seven-figure sums, though no verifiable documentation has been made publicly available.

Northstar has not publicly addressed these specific allegations, but has maintained that the incident was the result of a contained operational failure and that all relevant safety and investigative procedures were followed.
